Subject: Coordinated motion of c-axis with g2 command

Hi Tom,

Someone asked me this question – Is it possible to have coordinated motion of the c-axis  with a g2 or g3 command?  In other words, can you define the c-axis as the orthogonal axis for a spiral cut, like this:

G2 X10 Y10 C10 i5 j0

I told them I don’t think this is possible, and they would need to generate a series of small g-code segments, which is typically how 5-axis machining is handled.  But I thought I would ask anyway.

Thanks,

Toby

Hi Toby,

I believe that should work.  The other axis should just be linearly interpolated just like when you do Z and form a helix.

    Hi Tom,

    It appears that it doesn’t quite work. I tried running the following program, which produces a 180-degree arc on the x-y plane:

    g0 x0 y0 c0

    g2 x10 y0 c10 i5 j0

    m2

    The c-axis jumps back to zero at 45-degree intervals along the x-y arc.  So it jumps back to zero three times along the 180 degree arc.  However, each time it jumps back to zero, it resumes motion towards the target of c=10, so in the end, it reaches the destination.

    I have an application that would be greatly simplified if this was fixed.  Do you think it is something that might make it into the next version?

    Toby

    Hi Toby,

    Sounds like a bug, let us look into it.

    I like how you describe it as "doesn't quite work" :}
